HA8 Task 4 - Design Pack

Task 4 – Design Pack

Sidekick - Front

I used grid lined paper to draw a front view of my sidekick. I added lots of detail including features of my sidekick (TV Screen).

Sidekick - Back

Sidekick - Side

Eye design

I used this image to help me design the shape of my sidekicks eyes.

Screen design

I found this image on the internet and used it on the design of my sidekick. I added this image to the shape of the screen on my sidekicks torso to make it appear as a TV screen.

HA8 Task 5 - Production

Task 5 - Production

Tuesday 5th May 2015
I changed the background of my Sidekick drawing to blue on Photoshop using multiply and changing the opacity to 75%. I did this because you can’t see the wireframe on Modeller against a white background.

Thursday 7th May 2015
I selected the disc tool and made a shape for the head. I then extruded the polygon to make it a 3d sphere shape. I surfaced the polygon.

I then selected the box tool to create my models torso. I extruded the box to make it 3d. I then selected the points on the front of the polygon and rotated it to make it slanted. I then surfaced the polygon.

I then used a box polygon which I extruded to make the bottom half of my model. I surfaced the polygon and then changed the shape of the polygon using the stretch tool. I found this tricky at first because the shape didn’t match my drawing.

Monday 11th May 2015
Making the model eyes. Using the pen tool I drew around the eye shape on my background drawing. When I had the correct shape I bevelled the polygon to make an eye socket. I then used the disc tool to create the iris and pupil. I then surfaced all of the polygons so I could see each individual polygon.

Tuesday 12th May 2015
I used two disc shapes to make the arm. I had to connect the polygons. I did this by selecting the points and making a polygon. I had to change the shape and size of the arm to make it wider and larger towards the elbow and then thinner towards the wrist joint. I surfaced this polygon and then mirrored it to make two arms.

I then started with a box to create my models hand. I added extra boxes and extruded them to make the fingers for my model. I found this very straightforward and easy to do. Then i surfaced the finished hand.

Thursday 14th May 2015

Hands continuation. I had to split each individual finger into three segments in order to create joints. I then used the bend too. This made the fingers bend round to show a clasped hand. I bevelled all fingers to make them look rounded. I found parts of this difficult because the polygons were going inside out and the fingers kept bending the wrong way.

Monday 18th May 2015
To make the mouth on my model I had to select polygons from the head. I used multishift to make the mouth indent. I then moved the other polygons to position the mouth by selecting the points. Once the mouth was correctly positioned I needed to make teeth.

I first tried the disc tool. I changed the number of sides to three to make a triangle. I then bevelled the triangle and then rotated it and moved it into position. Io then surfaced the polygon an mirrored it to make the other tooth.

I then created a caterpillar track for the bottom of my model to show its form of movement. I started by creating two discs, I then cut them in half and selected the points to make them into one polygon. I then copied this shape and drilled into it. I then had to delete the inside of the polygon and extruded the remaining polygon out.

This is my completed sidekick in Modeler.

Thursday 21st May 2015

I then loaded my sidekick into LightWave layout. I then chose different surfaces to apply to my sidekick. Once I had applied all of my surfaces I then used the camera at different angles and positions to take shots of my sidekick . This was able to show a 360 degree view of the completed sidekick.

These are the completed rendered screenshots of my sidekick character Gadget. He is an all knowing, helpful robot. His uses include domestic work, social interaction and entertainment, and will follow any command given.

HA8 Task 7 - Review

Task 7 - Review
The aim of Unit 66 was to create our own sidekick using Modeler and Layout. I watched a series of Lightwave tutorial videos to learn how to use the software. Using these videos I created a range of different models from a hammer, camera, rifle and a jet pack. This was useful as it gave me the opportunity to learn different modeling techniques such as box modelling, reference modelling, primitive modelling and extrusion modelling. I felt quite confident when using the tutorial videos and found creating the hammer the easiest task and felt this had the best outcome. However when creating the jet pack I came across lots of problems as I didn't have the video to follow step by step.

I created a schedule in Excel which was able to show a breakdown of which tasks I planned to achieve each week. I could then look over this schedule and see if I had managed to meet the targets or not. I think the schedule was good as it helped me to manage my time.

After this I had to start the design process for my sidekick. Firstly I created a mood board which had images taken from the internet of different robots. I found doing a mood board useful as it helped me to generate ideas for my sidekick.

After this I then made a mind map with different ideas for my sidekick. These included defence/offence, entertainment, work and other ideas. I found the mind map helpful because it allowed me to break down my ideas into categories.

I then designed a PowerPoint which was able to show images of the different tasks my robot sidekick could carry out. This was a good way of showing visually what my sidekick would do.

Next I started my design pack. I drew out on grid lined paper three different views of my sidekick (Front, side and back). I then had to transfer this design onto the computer, I achieved this by scanning each image in individually and making them into JPEG's in Photoshop. Having a design pack was helpful because it assisted me in creating my model. I was able to show on paper how I wanted my sidekick to look.

With my design pack complete it was now time to make the sidekick in Modeler. I experienced some difficulty at the beginning with polygons going inside one another, however with assistance from my tutor I soon solved this issue. I found modeling the simple body parts quite easy such as the head, torso and lower body. However I did struggle when modeling the more difficult body parts such as the eyes, hands and caterpillar track.

After fully completing my model i was then able to transfer it over to Layout. In this program I could then add different surfaces which brought my sidekick to life. I then used the camera in Layout to take some rendered shots of my finished sidekick. I found the layout software quite easy to use when surfacing my completed model.

Overall my expectations of my sidekick are better than I thought, I am pleased with the outcome and have enjoyed the process of making it.
